The virtual exhibitions are the occasion for us to present different written or illustrated documents on various themes that are part of Bordeaux’s municipal archive collection.
Edmond Fontan, who was a stone-cutter’s son, (Bordeaux, May 9, 1854 - February 18, 1929) was a draughtsman for the railroad company of the Midi region. He was an amateur watercolorist, was interested in the historical center of Bordeaux and criss-crossed the region. As he mastered the technique perfectly, he devoted himself to reconstituting materials and ambiances. Starting in 1882, he exhibited at the Salon de Paris, and as a member of local art associations, such as the Amis des arts or l’Atelier, he received numerous medals.
A selection of his works proposes a view of Old Bordeaux at the turning point between the 19th and 20th centuries.
Place des Quinconces. This esplanade, well-known by Bordeaux residents and tourists alike for its exceptional dimensions, has been the site of fairs and diverse events since the 19th century. Many people, however, are unaware that in this place, there once stood an imposing fortress.
Using elements that were reassembled and presented in 1966 by Jean-Paul Avisseau, then Director of the municipal Archives, and relying on recent findings, this exhibition proposes to return to the principal dates in the history of this military construction implanted in the heart of the city.
